Most drivers underestimate how much a tire defines the car beneath them. Power, weight, and suspension mean little if the rubber can’t translate it all to the pavement. That became clear when we swapped our 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS onto a set of Yokohama ADVAN Apex V601 tires.

Yokohama’s ADVAN lineup carries a strong reputation among enthusiasts. The Apex V601 is the brand’s ultra-high-performance summer tire, developed for drivers who want sharper handling and more grip without sacrificing everyday comfort. It’s built using lessons from the track, but it’s meant for the real world.

We mounted 245/45R20 fronts and 275/40R20 rears and covered just over 10,000 kilometres through a mixed bag of driving conditions, including city commutes, highway trips, and plenty of weekend drives. The change in character was immediate. The Camaro felt more precise and planted, especially during quick transitions or lane changes. Road noise dropped noticeably, and there was a smoother, more controlled feel through the steering wheel at speed.

On rougher pavement, the ADVAN Apex held up well. It delivered solid feedback without making the ride harsh, a tricky balance for a tire in this category. Yokohama’s use of twin steel belts and a full nylon cap ply gives it rigidity when cornering while keeping the sidewalls flexible enough to absorb small impacts. The result is a tire that feels connected without being overly stiff.

The Camaro’s 6.2-litre V8 produces 426 horsepower at 5,900RPM and 420 lb-ft. of torque at 4,600RPM, and traction has always been a challenge. The Apex V601 made a noticeable difference when putting that power down. The high-grip micro-silica compound provides strong traction in both dry and wet conditions, while the asymmetric tread pattern offers wide outer shoulder blocks for cornering stability and inner grooves that channel water efficiently. Even during heavy rain, the car remained confident and easy to control.

Yokohama positions the Apex as a tire capable of light track work, though our time with it was limited to public roads. From a driver’s perspective, it feels capable of more than typical street duties, with consistent grip over long drives and predictable behavior when pushed. Anyone considering occasional performance driving would likely find it well-suited, provided conditions remain warm and dry.

In daily use, the Apex proved easy to live with. Noise levels stayed low, and the tire tracked smoothly over uneven roads without tramlining. On colder mornings, the TPMS readings showed mild pressure differences until the tires warmed up, which is typical for summer compounds. Once at temperature, the ride remained balanced and composed.

After a full season, tread wear has been minimal. The Apex V601 carries a 25,000-mile warranty, or 12,500 miles for staggered setups like ours, and the results so far suggest that’s achievable. The shoulders remain even, and there’s no cupping or feathering. Considering the Camaro’s weight and torque output, that speaks well to durability.

Fuel economy stayed steady at 13.0L/100km on 91-octane fuel. The Apex didn’t improve efficiency, though it didn’t worsen it either. The added stability and grip inspired smoother driving, which made longer trips more enjoyable.

Pricing sits below several European competitors while delivering comparable performance and refinement. It’s not a budget tire, but it offers strong value for those who prioritize confident handling and composure in a summer setup. The only real drawback is seasonal: once temperatures drop, the compound hardens, so storage or a winter set is essential in colder climates.

The Yokohama ADVAN Apex V601 gave our Camaro SS a level of polish and confidence it never had before. It tightened up the feel, reduced noise, and delivered grip that matches the car’s performance. For anyone looking to upgrade from factory rubber and experience a genuine step forward in both comfort and control, the Apex V601 is an easy recommendation. It’s a reminder that the right tire doesn’t just improve a car — it unlocks more of what it was designed to be.
