As winter weather brings snow and ice to many regions, drivers need a reliable set of tires that can handle the challenging conditions without compromising performance or safety. While our 2014 Subaru Legacy isn’t the flashiest car on the road, it provides a stable platform to test winter tires thoroughly. We recently had the opportunity to put the Yokohama BluEarth WINTER V906 tires sized 225/50/R17 to the test. Here’s what we found after weeks of winter driving.

The first thing that struck us was how quiet these winter tires were. Typically, winter tires can produce more road noise due to their aggressive tread designs, but Yokohama’s BluEarth WINTER V906 was refreshingly quiet. Thanks to its advanced silica-rich compound, the tires stayed flexible and pliable, even in freezing temperatures, which not only contributed to a quieter ride but also enhanced grip on ice and snow. This characteristic is consistent with what we experienced with the Yokohama ADVAN SPORT A/S+ tires, which also impressed us with their quiet operation and improved handling on our Subaru Legacy.

Where the BluEarth WINTER V906 really stood out was in its snow and ice handling. The V-shaped tread pattern and multiple grooves are designed specifically for winter performance. Yokohama’s 3D sipes and deep zigzag grooves do a fantastic job of biting into snow and ice, making sure the tires maintain excellent traction. We felt confident driving through heavy snow and slush, even during the worst Ontario storms.

In particular, the braking distances were shorter than we expected, especially in icy conditions. Whether navigating snow-packed side streets or slick highways, the tires held up exceptionally well. The car’s stability in corners and under braking was a reassuring reminder of how vital it is to have a reliable winter tire. Much like the impressive ice and snow performance we found with the Yokohama iceGUARD G075 tires on our Subaru Forester Sport, these tires give you peace of mind in the toughest conditions.
Winter tires are generally known to reduce fuel efficiency due to their softer compounds and increased rolling resistance. While we did notice a slight reduction in fuel economy compared to our previous all-season tires, it wasn’t drastic, and the enhanced safety was more than worth the trade-off.
As for tread wear, winter tires typically don’t last as long as their all-season counterparts due to the soft compounds designed to handle cold conditions. However, Yokohama’s BluEarth WINTER V906 uses a dual-layer rubber compound that helps reduce rolling resistance and wear over time. While we haven’t had these tires long enough to test their full lifespan, they seem durable enough to last through multiple winter seasons without significant loss of performance.
If you’re looking for a winter tire that combines solid performance with comfort, the Yokohama BluEarth WINTER V906 is an excellent choice. Its ability to maintain traction in harsh winter conditions while providing a quiet ride is a winning combination. For drivers who face challenging winters, especially in areas like Ontario, these tires provide peace of mind and safety, whether you’re navigating snowy back roads or icy city streets.
We would confidently recommend the BluEarth WINTER V906 to anyone seeking reliable winter tires that perform well in both snow and ice without sacrificing driving comfort. The tires gave our 2014 Subaru Legacy a renewed sense of stability, transforming winter driving into a safer and more enjoyable experience.
