The Hyundai Tucson, originally based on Elantra’s platform, made its debut in dealerships around 17 years ago. The Tucson, which fit nicely in the Hyundai lineup just below the Sante-Fe, was a low-cost entry into a growing compact crossover segment.  Fast forward to present day, the Tucson has successfully transitioned to the fourth generation through a complete redesign, with promise of becoming a game changer in the popular compact crossover segment.

When Hyundai Canada presented us with the opportunity to test drive the 2022 Hyundai Tucson Ultimate Hybrid AWD, we jumped at the opportunity. The redesigned fourth-generation Tucson is a stunning vehicle, so we were excited to get our hands on it. Our test vehicle featured a Crystal White paint scheme, 19-inch alloy wheels, an 8-speaker Bose sound system, and a 10.25-inch Full LCD Instrument Cluster, along with many other things.

The Tucson Ultimate Hybrid is powered by a 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, a 1.49kWh battery pack, a 44kW electric motor, and a six-speed automatic transmission, which all contribute to the vehicle’s total output of 227 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.  Entering the highway is a breeze; it doesn’t appear to be sluggish in the slightest.

When it comes to interior design, Hyundai has outdone its rivals.  Indicator stalks that look like they came out of a jewelry box, air vents that disappear into the dashboard, and a well-thought-out interior design are just some of the elegant features of the Tucson’s interior.  Although the lack of a volume knob is a real let down, getting used to the volume control buttons is fairly easy. We like the futuristic look and feel of the steering wheel, which is pleasantly weighted in all driving conditions.

At first glance, the Tucson Ultimate’s 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system may appear intimidating, but it is actually quite simple to use.  Having said that, we do miss having physical volume buttons to use.  As expected, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration is a breeze.  The Tucson Ultimate’s eight-speaker Bose audio system provided excellent sound quality throughout the vehicle.

There is a variety of trim levels with the Essential starting at $29,855, the Preferred at $32,255, the Urban starting at $39,251, N Line starting at $39,251, the Luxury Hybrid AWD beginning at $41,051 and the Ultimate Hybrid AWD beginning at $43,751. You’ll have a wide range of options when it comes to purchasing a Tucson. Since no options were selected for our 2022 Hyundai Tucson Ultimate Hybrid AWD tester, the sticker price remained untouched at $43,751.

A plethora of safety features, such as Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian, Cyclist, and Junction Turning detection, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go Capability, Highway Driving Assist, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, Blind View Monitor, Surround View Monitor, Remote Smart Parking Assist, and Smart Cruise Control, could be found in our Tucson Ultimate test vehicle.

According to Hyundai, the 1.6-liter turbocharged engine in our Tucson Ultimate Hybrid configuration should return 6.3 L/100 km in the city, 6.6 L/100 km on the highway, and an overall fuel economy rating of 6.8 L/100 km in combined driving.

The average fuel consumption for our test week, which included both highway and city driving, was 6.6 L/100 km.  The Tucson does a fantastic job with the help of a hybrid system and a slight adjustment to our driving habits, and we appreciate the savings, especially with the current fuel pump prices.

The 2022 Hyundai Tucson is a very aggressively styled machine that features high quality materials throughout the cabin, a touchscreen with a multitude of cool features, extremely comfortable seats for the entire family making long drives a pleasure, an impressive suspension setup that absorbs road imperfections, and seamless transitions between the electric and gasoline motors. All of which makes it one of the most efficient vehicles in its class.  We strongly believe that you should consider the 2022 Hyundai Tucson when shopping for your next vehicle.
