A lot of reasonably priced vehicles nowadays try to push a bunch of features and premium surfaces to promote a sense of faux luxury to the end user, but only end up overwhelming the driver while sacrificing quality where it really matters. The 2026 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid presents a shift in this mentality by delivering a well sorted-out experience that never feels overdone. It has stunning looks, a realistic amount of luxury, and a reasonable amount of power, all of which come together to deliver a truly exceptional experience at this price point.

Getting up and going under normal use is no problem for this full-sized hybrid sedan, with its 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine coupled to an electric motor producing a combined 192 horsepower and 151 lb-ft. of torque. Power delivery feels smooth during highway merging with zero need to go foot to the floor. The hybrid system seamlessly switches between the gasoline engine and electric motor, often preferring electric power during cruising to provide a more refined and comfortable experience. Put your foot down, however, and it is a different story as there is a noticeable delay before the gasoline engine fully engages. Despite having a conventional six-speed automatic transmission, the extra power takes a considerable amount of time to arrive.

Road manners are a completely different ball game for the Sonata, with an elegantly tuned suspension that soaks up even the roughest bumps to provide ride quality that rivals cars double its price. It does slightly show its size with a heavier steering feel that makes navigating higher speed corners feel more akin to a much larger sedan, along with some understeer due to the front-wheel drive layout. That is the tradeoff for having a composed sedan that feels more at home covering long highway distances. Braking is very responsive with a strong pedal feel and almost no play, making quick stops feel easy and effortless.

The exterior of the Sonata carries a bold look that blends futuristic styling with a more mature presence, all wrapped in a stunning Matte Aero Silver paint finish which, under the right lighting, really accentuates the subtle contours of the body. The front and rear both receive subtle light bar treatments that are not overwhelming, in addition to separate lighting elements that handle the heavy lifting for visibility. Don’t be mistaken though, as there are still enough unique accents sprinkled throughout to give the car a slightly sportier edge.

On the inside, it is a very comfortable affair with a copious amount of space, a large panoramic moonroof that brings in plenty of light, and plenty of creature comforts such as power adjustable leather seats that can be heated or ventilated for both front occupants. Many climate functions are handled through a separate LCD screen which makes the Sonata feel more sophisticated, though it does lack the tactile feel that physical controls provide when adjusting settings on the fly. Thankfully, separate knobs remain for climate temperature adjustment and automatic climate control activation. What really stands out, however, is just how quiet the cabin remains even at highway speeds, creating an experience so isolated you can almost feel your ears pop during prolonged drives.

As with any modern vehicle, there are also plenty of technological bells and whistles at your disposal, including a 12.3-inch infotainment display and an instrument cluster that cleverly combines a smaller 4.2-inch LCD driver display with separate digital dials, all set behind a single panel of glass that gives the illusion of one large screen. The six-speaker audio system might not carry any premium branding but, when paired with the quiet cabin, delivers exceptionally clear audio with very little distortion while filtering out the majority of outside noise. Standard driver assistance technology such as radar cruise control and lane keeping assist also make long highway drives more comfortable, although the lane keeping assist can feel slightly twitchy at times while trying to remain perfectly centered in the lane. Certain features such as parking sensors are missing, though adding them would only increase the selling price.

Natural Resources Canada rates the Sonata Hybrid at 5.3L/100km city and 4.6L/100km highway for a combined rating of 5.0L/100km. During our test, we achieved an average of 6.2L/100km, largely due to frequent stop-and-go traffic and colder temperatures requiring increased heater use. Despite the higher observed consumption, we still managed a very impressive driving range of more than 800 kilometres.
