2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV RS AWD - Driveman.ca

Chevrolet’s mid-size Blazer nameplate has seen a number of reinventions, but the 2024 Blazer EV is arguably its boldest yet. Built on GM’s Ultium platform, this all-electric SUV moves away from nostalgia and leans hard into modernity, offering sharp design, innovative technology, and performance-oriented trims aimed at taking on the growing list of EV competitors. In RS AWD form, the Blazer EV tries to strike a balance between sporty aesthetics and family functionality.

We spent a week with the RS AWD trim thanks to GM Canada, evaluating it in mixed Ontario spring conditions to see how it handles real-world usability, range, and comfort for Canadian buyers.

The exterior design takes clear cues from Chevrolet’s performance catalog. The front end features a slim lighting signature, full-width light bar, and an illuminated Chevy badge. Finished in Radiant Red Tintcoat with black accents and 21-inch wheels, the RS stands out as one of the more aggressive-looking EVs in this segment. The flush door handles and sculpted profile not only look sleek but aid in aerodynamic efficiency. While there’s no traditional front grille, the front fascia’s angular cutouts and contrasting trim add depth to the design.

Under the hood, the RS AWD trim is powered by a dual-motor setup making 288 horsepower and 333 lb-ft. of torque. Power is delivered through all four wheels via Chevrolet’s eAWD system. Acceleration is strong enough for daily driving but doesn’t feel as sharp as the styling might imply. Brake pedal modulation can be inconsistent at lower speeds, and the steering lacks feedback during tight manoeuvres, which occasionally undermines confidence in parking situations or slower corners. Regenerative braking works well overall, and the one-pedal driving mode is intuitive in traffic.

Battery capacity for this RS AWD variant is 85kWh, with a Natural Resources Canada-estimated range of up to 449 kilometres. Our real-world range came in around 401 kilometres in a mix of city and highway driving. The Blazer EV supports Level 1, Level 2, and DC fast charging up to 190kW, allowing up to 125 kilometres of range to be added in approximately 10 minutes using a compatible DC fast charger.

Inside, the RS trim presents a tech-forward layout anchored by a 17.7-inch infotainment screen and an 11-inch digital gauge cluster. Google built-in is standard, offering Google Maps and Assistant without the need for a smartphone, but it’s important to note that both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not supported — a surprising omission for a vehicle in this price bracket. Voice command performance was decent, although some prompts needed to be repeated. One odd quirk: the vehicle shuts off entirely when the driver door opens, which is inconvenient if you’re just stepping out briefly.

Cabin materials are solid, if not premium. The perforated leatherette seats with red contrast stitching include both heating and ventilation. Rear-seat space is generous, and the flat floor helps with middle-seat comfort. Cargo capacity is rated at 722 litres behind the second row and expands to 1,818 litres with the seats folded. There’s no front trunk, but underfloor storage in the cargo area provides room for cables and small accessories. The standard sound system was acceptable, but lacked low-end definition and sounded flat at higher volumes.

Chevrolet Safety Assist is included and brings forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and front pedestrian braking. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a surround-view camera system are also equipped on the RS. Super Cruise is available on this trim, though it wasn’t installed on our tester.

Pricing for the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV starts at $56,999 for the LT AWD. The RS AWD trim tested here is listed at $63,999 before taxes and fees. That puts it in similar territory to other electric crossovers we’ve reviewed, such as the Ford Mustang Mach-E, though each offers a different take on range, technology, and design.

According to Natural Resources Canada, the RS AWD is rated at 21.1kWh/100km city and 24.5kWh/100km highway, for a combined 22.9kWh/100km. Our observed figure was slightly higher at 24.3kWh/100km, consistent with colder temperatures and mixed suburban use.

The 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV RS AWD brings presence and tech to the table, offering solid range and charging capability in a segment where new players continue to emerge. But the driving experience doesn’t fully live up to the visual promise, and the lack of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto may be a dealbreaker for some. Still, for buyers looking for a uniquely styled electric SUV with everyday utility, the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV RS AWD is worth a look — just expect a few compromises along the way.
