2026 Ram 1500 Sport Review

There is something reassuring about a V8. In an era where turbochargers, hybrid systems and an ever-growing need to make the pickup segment fit into a mould it was never intended for, the unmistakable bark of eight cylinders firing to life still has a way of making enthusiasts pause and smile. Fortunately, Ram understands this better than most.

For 2026, the Ram 1500 Sport continues to offer buyers something increasingly rare in the full-size truck segment: the option to pair the truck’s already impressive capability with the legendary 5.7-litre HEMI V8. With the HEMI back alongside Ram’s expanding lineup of powertrain choices, frankly, we’re glad it is.

At first glance, the 2026 Ram 1500 Sport isn’t trying to reinvent itself, and that’s perfectly fine. The styling remains largely familiar, retaining the bold proportions and commanding road presence that have helped make the current generation one of the most recognizable trucks on Canadian roads. It’s a design that still works exceptionally well, looking every bit the capable workhorse while maintaining a level of refinement often absent in the segment.

Our press vehicle arrived equipped with the Night Edition, and if the standard Sport wasn’t intimidating enough, this package adds just enough attitude to elevate its appearance from confident to slightly menacing. The darkened trim, wheels and accents give the truck a purposeful stance that feels perfectly suited to its personality.

Of course, there is also the Sport hood, with vents and sculpting that suggest high-performance intentions. Attractive? Absolutely. Think of them as the automotive equivalent of bicep veins painted onto a superhero costume. They may not be the reason you buy the truck, but they certainly complete the look.

While the exterior draws attention, the true star of the show sits beneath the hood.

The moment you fire up the 5.7-litre HEMI, you’re reminded why enthusiasts fought so hard for its return. The cold start delivers exactly the soundtrack you’d expect from a proper V8. There’s a deep rumble, a sense of occasion and just enough theatre to make even mundane grocery runs feel special.

More importantly, that sound doesn’t disappear once you’re underway. Put your right foot down and the HEMI responds with an unmistakable growl that follows you throughout the rev range. It serves as a constant reminder that despite driving what is fundamentally a utility-focused truck, you’re still piloting something with genuine character.

The HEMI’s performance is further enhanced through Ram’s eTorque system. Before anyone starts worrying about charging stations and extension cords, let’s clarify what eTorque actually does.

The mild-hybrid system quietly works behind the scenes to assist the engine during acceleration, smooth out the automatic start-stop system and recover energy under braking. Unlike a conventional hybrid, it never powers the truck solely on electricity. Instead, it adds another layer of refinement to an otherwise very traditional V8 experience.

The result is a truck that feels smoother leaving stoplights, shifts seamlessly and delivers an overall driving experience that feels more polished than you might expect from a conventional V8-powered pickup.

However, don’t let the Sport badge fool you into thinking this is a corner-carving performance truck.

The Ram 1500 Sport remains a full-size pickup first and foremost, and Ram has wisely resisted the temptation to make it something it isn’t. Instead, the focus is on making the truck confidence-inspiring in everyday driving situations.

One area where this becomes immediately apparent is braking performance. The brake pedal is progressive and easy to modulate, requiring minimal effort while providing excellent feedback. It allows you to precisely meter how much stopping force you want, which becomes particularly useful in something this large.

There was a time when pickup truck interiors seemed like an afterthought. Fortunately, those days are long gone, and the Ram 1500 Sport serves as evidence of just how far the segment has evolved.

The materials throughout the cabin feel upscale, the fit and finish are excellent, and nothing about the interior feels inexpensive. Critics will undoubtedly argue that modern pickup trucks have become luxury vehicles that occasionally haul lumber, and there is certainly some truth to that statement. The difference here is that Ram manages to deliver a premium experience without sacrificing the practical capability owners expect.

In many ways, the Ram 1500 Sport feels equally comfortable arriving at a downtown steakhouse as it does backing up to a trailer hitch.

Adding to that premium experience is one of the best suspension setups currently available in a full-size pickup.

Gone are the days when trucks bounced down the road like boats navigating rough seas. The Ram’s suspension strikes an impressive balance between comfort and capability. It absorbs broken pavement with composure while maintaining enough control to keep the truck feeling planted and predictable. When the pavement ends and trails begin, that same suspension setup remains capable enough to continue the journey without complaint.

With the windows up and doors closed, outside noise all but disappears. Wind noise is minimal, road noise is exceptionally well controlled, and the cabin remains remarkably quiet. Thankfully, Ram engineers exercised good judgment and allowed just enough of the HEMI’s soundtrack to filter through when you ask for it. Some noises deserve preserving, and a naturally aspirated V8 happens to be one of them.

The fully digital instrument cluster is easily among the best I’ve experienced this year. The display is crisp, high-resolution and refreshingly customizable. More importantly, its customization serves a purpose. Drivers can configure the information presented based on their needs, whether prioritizing navigation, towing data, fuel economy or traditional vehicle information. The execution feels thoughtful and intuitive throughout.

The vertically oriented centre touchscreen continues to divide opinion. While the system itself is responsive and logically organized, the layout still presents some usability challenges. Accessing certain menus can feel like navigating an endless collection of submenus and settings pages. The functionality is all there, but occasionally locating a specific setting requires more taps than it should.

If two digital screens aren’t enough, Ram offers something that still feels delightfully excessive: a dedicated passenger screen. Thanks to specialized viewing technology, the display remains hidden from the driver while staying fully visible to the front passenger. At first glance, it sounds like a gimmick. After spending time with it, I’m not so sure.

Passengers can access navigation functions, monitor camera views, connect devices, enjoy entertainment content and even use the integrated HDMI connection. On long road trips, that HDMI port may turn out to be one of the most appreciated features in the truck. Whether it’s a streaming device, laptop or portable gaming console, the possibilities are surprisingly extensive.

Pair all that with the available Harman Kardon premium audio system and the cabin transforms into a rolling club on wheels. Sound reproduction is exceptionally clear, the surround-sound effect works remarkably well and, with some careful equalizer adjustments, the system’s subwoofer delivers enough bass to satisfy even demanding listeners.

Finally, despite all the luxury and technology, the Ram 1500 Sport never forgets it’s still a truck.

The camera system is outstanding, delivering image quality that borders on absurdly sharp for a pickup truck. Multiple camera views make parking and manoeuvring significantly easier. When you’re navigating what can only be described as a four-wheeled land yacht through tight spaces, every pixel counts.

The 2026 Ram 1500 Sport succeeds because it refuses to compromise. It offers luxury without becoming soft, capability without feeling crude and technology without completely abandoning common sense. Most importantly, when equipped with the 5.7-litre HEMI V8, it delivers something many modern vehicles have forgotten: personality.

And in a world rapidly running out of naturally aspirated V8s, that alone might be reason enough to appreciate it while we still can.
