I knew the week was going to be entertaining the moment strangers started offering unsolicited compliments. “I like your car,” “nice car mister,” and the unexpected “what BMW is that?” became a running theme, each one confirming that this matte-black roadster has a presence that’s impossible to ignore.

The Final Edition’s Frozen Black paint, available exclusively on this limited run of 58 units in Canada, gives the Z4 a low, wide, almost predatory stance, helped along by the staggered 19/20-inch 800M wheels and the burnished finish that catches light in a way the paint intentionally doesn’t. If a certain masked vigilante wanted to slip through the city without drawing too much attention yet still maintain his aesthetic, this would be the car he’d choose.

Drop yourself inside and the Z4 immediately tightens its grip around you. The interior feels like a cockpit, everything packaged tightly and intentionally, with the black Vernasca leather and Alcantara combination stitched in red across the seats, dashboard, centre console, door panels and even the floor mats. You sit low, the armrest perfectly aligned for precise gear changes, which matters because this particular Final Edition comes with the six-speed manual, a no-cost option, thank you BMW, that transforms the car’s personality.

The centre console hides a small storage area and the cupholders, but BMW’s designers cleverly ensured you only need to open one side to fit a drink, allowing your arm to remain planted for shifts without compromise. It’s a small detail, but one that reinforces how driver-centric the cabin really is.

That cockpit feeling does come with some trade-offs. The A-pillars are thick, a byproduct of structural rigidity, and they create blind spots that make you second-guess your proximity to curbs or traffic. It’s not a flaw so much as an adjustment period, something you learn to work around. And once the roof is down, those constraints disappear entirely. The Z4 becomes the car it was always meant to be, open, expressive and eager to show off the full breadth of its personality.

Under the hood sits BMW’s familiar and well-loved 3.0-litre TwinPower Turbo inline-six, the B58, delivering 382 horsepower and 369 lb-ft. of torque. It’s a proven engine across the lineup, and in the Z4 it delivers smooth, enthusiastic acceleration rather than the violent shove some might expect from an M-badged roadster.

It’s quick, unquestionably, but the power delivery is more refined than feral. The manual transmission follows the same theme. The clutch feels almost assisted, the shifts are buttery rather than mechanical, and while the engagement is enjoyable, it doesn’t have the notchy, tactile throw that hardcore purists might crave.

The brakes, however, are unapologetically aggressive. The M Sport units stop the car with startling immediacy, reminding you that BMW still knows how to tune hardware for drama when it wants to.

Perhaps the best way to understand the Z4 Final Edition is to stop thinking of it as another M car and start seeing it as a grand-touring roadster with a performance edge. It’s a car you can drive for hours without fatigue, something made obvious by the way the Adaptive M Suspension transitions through Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus without ever becoming punishing.

Even in its most aggressive setting, the Z4 never tries to intimidate you. It’s thrilling, but not exhausting; engaging, but not overwhelming. It’s the sort of car that makes you smile without making you question your life choices.

Top-down driving pairs beautifully with the Harman Kardon sound system, which is tuned exceptionally well for a soft-top convertible. Even with the roof open, the music never feels drowned out, maintaining clarity and presence regardless of speed. The infotainment system, a familiar BMW layout, is functional but occasionally confusing, with menu structures that aren’t always intuitive when you’re trying to find something quickly. It’s not a deal-breaker, just a momentary frustration in an otherwise cohesive interior experience.

The Z4 M40i Roadster Final Edition isn’t the sharpest tool in BMW’s performance shed. Instead, it’s a beautifully balanced, deeply enjoyable roadster that blends style, exclusivity and everyday usability in a way few modern convertibles manage.

It’s a car that earns compliments without asking for them, a car that feels special without needing to shout, and a car that proves BMW still knows how to make driving feel like an event even when the goal is simply to enjoy the road ahead. We hope to see a new roadster in the lineup soon, as this one was a joy to drive.
