Since its debut in 1975, the 3 Series has built a reputation for blending everyday practicality with engaging driving dynamics, becoming the benchmark against which rivals are measured. Five decades later, BMW is celebrating that legacy with the limited-production 2026 BMW M340i xDrive50 Jahre Edition, a special model that pays tribute to the generations that came before it while showcasing why the 3 Series remains one of the most desirable sedans on the road today.
At first glance, the M340i 50 Jahre Edition looks familiar, but enthusiasts will quickly notice the details that set it apart. The anniversary model receives a collection of exclusive touches inspired by past generations of the 3 Series.
BMW offers six heritage-inspired paint colours, each representing a different era of 3 Series history. Colours such as Avus Blue Metallic, Laguna Green Metallic, Madeira Red Metallic, Deep Green Metallic, Carbon Black Metallic, and Citrin Black Metallic evoke memories of iconic E21, E30, E36, E46, and E90 models. These classic finishes give the sedan a sense of nostalgia without feeling dated.
The special edition also features 20-inch forged M Performance wheels finished in Ferric Grey, an M Performance exhaust system, exclusive anniversary badging, and unique “3 Series 50 Jahre Edition” door sill plates. A commemorative plaque inside the cabin further reinforces the car’s limited-production status.
Despite the celebratory details, the M340i remains an athletic-looking sedan. Aggressive front air intakes, Shadowline exterior trim, sculpted bodywork, and quad exhaust finishers ensure it still looks every bit the performance sedan BMW intended.
Under the hood sits one of BMW’s finest modern engines: the turbocharged 3.0L B58 inline-six. Producing 386 horsepower and 398 lb-ft. of torque, it delivers effortless acceleration and remarkable refinement. Paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system and an 8-speed automatic transmission, the powertrain feels both sophisticated and brutally effective when called upon.
The M340i xDrive can sprint from 0–100 km/h in roughly 4.4 seconds, placing it firmly in sports car territory while retaining the civility expected from a luxury sedan. What makes the B58 special isn’t just its performance figures, it’s the way it delivers power. The engine responds immediately, pulls strongly through the rev range, and emits a smooth, distinctive inline-six soundtrack that few competitors can match.
The standard xDrive all-wheel drive system provides exceptional traction in all weather conditions, while the adaptive M suspension strikes an impressive balance between comfort and agility. Turn-in is sharp, body roll is minimal, and the chassis feels planted even during spirited driving. The steering may not possess the tactile feedback of older BMWs, but it remains precise and confidence-inspiring. Whether navigating urban traffic, attacking a winding back road, or cruising on the highway, the M340i feels composed and capable.
Inside, the 50 Jahre Edition elevates the already impressive M340i cabin with premium materials and exclusive details. Our tester was fitted with Ivory White Merino Leather, adding a richer and more luxurious feel than the standard interior. The special edition plaque and anniversary door sill plates provide subtle reminders that you’re driving something rare.
BMW’s Curved Display remains one of the highlights of the cabin. The setup combines a digital instrument cluster with a 14.9-inch central touchscreen, creating a modern and visually impressive dashboard design. The latest iDrive system is responsive, intuitive, and among the best infotainment platforms available today. Unlike many competitors, BMW continues to offer multiple methods of interaction, including touch controls, voice commands, steering wheel buttons, and the traditional iDrive rotary controller.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, while navigation, connected services, and over-the-air updates help keep the system current. Available driver-assistance technologies, including adaptive cruise control and lane-centering functions, make highway driving significantly less stressful.
For a sedan producing nearly 400 horsepower, efficiency remains remarkably impressive. Natural Resources Canada rates the M340i xDrive at 9.0L/100km city and 7.1L/100km highway for a combined rating of 8.2L/100km. During our testing, we observed an average of 7.7L/100km.
The 50 Jahre Edition starts at $91,900 CAD, while our tester came in at $93,900 CAD as equipped.
