BMW Canada has revived a legend. With the launch of the 2026 BMW 540i xDrive Legacy Edition, the brand isn’t simply adding another trim to the 5 Series lineup. It’s curating a collector’s piece. Limited to just 151 units and exclusively for the Canadian market, this Legacy Edition is a carefully considered homage to the quintessential 5 Series experience, blending heritage, artistry, and performance into one impeccably tailored package.

Growing up, the 5 Series of the 1990s was the businessman’s car. It was refined and timeless, carrying just the right amount of power to make its presence known without ever needing to shout. Seeing the 2026 540i today, I felt that same familiar tone from the outside. The silhouette is unmistakably 5 Series: confident, balanced, and elegant. Finished in Maldives Blue II Metallic, paired with 21-inch Aero wheels and the M Sport Pro package, the Legacy Edition looks every bit the part of a modern executive sedan. It’s a car that nods to its lineage while confidently stepping into the future.
Step inside, however, and BMW has taken a bold leap. At first glance, the cabin feels like a departure from tradition. My initial reaction was one of hesitation. Was this expressive design functional, or simply a case of the studio pushing boundaries for the sake of it? The longer I sat with it, the more it revealed itself. BMW has shifted the canvas. The exterior remains timeless art in motion, while the interior becomes art in presence.
Ambient lighting isn’t just illumination here, it’s the mood. Whether you choose a personalized setting or one of the predefined options, each transforms the cabin’s character in a way that feels deliberate. The Smoke White perforated and quilted Veganza seats, paired with Open Pore Ash Grey-Blue Fine-Wood trim, tie the interior together with a sophistication that feels curated rather than configured. It’s a space that doesn’t just invite you in. It makes you want to stay.

Of course, BMW’s motto of “The Ultimate Driving Machine” is more than a tagline. It’s a promise. The Legacy Edition delivers on it. The suspension setup is masterfully tuned, gliding over the road with a composed, almost effortless confidence. It’s not about eliminating feedback. It’s about filtering it, giving you only what matters. The cabin remains quiet and well insulated, allowing you to either disconnect entirely or immerse yourself in the Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system. The gearbox works quietly in the background. Shifts happen so seamlessly and unobtrusively that you barely notice them. Instead, you’re left to simply enjoy the drive, whether it’s a morning commute or a long highway stretch with a coffee in hand. It’s the kind of refinement that makes you forget the mechanics at play and focus only on the experience.
Switch the car into Sport Mode and the Legacy Edition sheds its calm demeanor. The seats increase their lateral support, the engine mapping sharpens, and the shifts become more assertive. The ambient lighting pivots from serene to intense, making it clear that it’s time to put the power down. The 3.0-litre TwinPower Turbo inline-six delivers 375 horsepower and 398 lb-ft. of torque, propelling the sedan from 0–100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds. It’s power delivered with civility, though, with no cracks, no pops, and no unnecessary theatrics. The Legacy Edition doesn’t need drama to prove itself. It simply gets the job done, and does so impeccably.
Technology plays its part as well. The 12.3-inch instrument panel and 14.9-inch control display running BMW OS 8.5 keep everything within reach, while the Digital Cockpit Professional adds a head-up display and augmented reality navigation. Parking Assistant Professional and Driving Assistant Plus with stop-and-go functionality ensure the car is as adept at easing through traffic as it is at stretching its legs on the open road. Adaptive LED headlights, an illuminated kidney grille, and Shadowline lights complete the package, ensuring the Legacy Edition looks as sharp at night as it does in daylight.
What strikes me most about this car is its balance. It’s not trying to be a monster, nor is it content to simply be a comfortable cruiser. Instead, it delivers a truly refined driving experience, one that prioritizes heritage, artistry, and composure. It understands its role and executes it with quiet confidence.

The Legacy Edition is more than a car. It’s a statement. It’s BMW reminding us that legacy isn’t about looking back. It’s about carrying forward. By blending timeless design with modern artistry and pairing heritage with performance, the 2026 BMW 540i xDrive Legacy Edition proves that the 5 Series remains the benchmark for executive sedans. All that remains is to choose your aesthetic, paintwork, upholstery, and trim. The rest becomes your legacy.
