Few nameplates have earned the respect of the Acura Integra. Long before horsepower figures became the centre of every performance car conversation, the Integra established itself through engineering, balance and a driving experience enthusiasts still talk about today. The GS-R introduced the B18C1, the DC2 Integra Type R became legendary with its B18C5, and countless garages were filled with LS/VTEC projects built by owners chasing the perfect Honda combination. Those cars became icons because they were rewarding to drive, not because they dominated a spec sheet.

That history made reviving the Integra one of Acura’s biggest challenges. While the standard Integra proved itself as a competent premium compact, it never carried the visual excitement or emotional connection enthusiasts expected from such an iconic badge. The Integra Type S changes that conversation before the engine is even started.

One of the biggest criticisms surrounding the standard Integra was its styling. It was clean, well proportioned and easy to live with, but it lacked the presence expected from a performance flagship. The Type S addresses that immediately with wider fenders, a vented aluminum hood, larger front air intakes, an aggressive rear diffuser and the now-signature triple-centre exhaust. Finished in Urban Grey Pearl, the Type S strikes an excellent balance between subtlety and aggression. It looks expensive, purposeful and, most importantly, worthy of wearing the Type S badge.

Comparisons with the Honda Civic Type R are unavoidable because the two share the same foundation. The K20C1 turbocharged four-cylinder, six-speed manual transmission and helical limited-slip differential all carry over, leading many to describe the Integra Type S as a more refined Civic Type R. Mechanically, that comparison is fair. Behind the wheel, however, the Integra Type S develops an identity that feels distinctly Acura.

The K20C1 produces 320 horsepower and 310 lb-ft. of torque, but the numbers only tell part of the story. More impressive is how seamlessly the drivetrain works as a whole. Clutch engagement is progressive, the six-speed manual feels mechanical without becoming heavy and the rev-matching system is exceptionally well calibrated. Rather than drawing attention to individual components, the Integra Type S delivers a driving experience where every input feels connected.

The biggest surprise during our week wasn’t the acceleration. It was the way the chassis behaved once the road became interesting. Turn-in is immediate, body control is exceptional and grip levels are remarkably high for a front-wheel-drive platform. There were moments when the Integra Type S almost felt like it was putting power down through all four wheels. It inspires confidence quickly and rewards drivers willing to carry speed through a corner rather than simply relying on straight-line performance.

That confidence isn’t without compromise. Push the car hard leaving a corner and torque steer reminds you exactly where the power is being sent. It is noticeable under heavy throttle, but never enough to overshadow what is arguably one of the best front-wheel-drive chassis currently on sale. If anything, it serves as a reminder that physics still applies, even to a car this well sorted.

The interior follows the same philosophy as the exterior. Rather than trying to overwhelm occupants with technology, Acura has focused on creating a driver-oriented cabin. The red leatherette and Ultrasuede seats provide excellent support, visibility remains impressive and the hatchback layout preserves the practicality that has always been part of the Integra formula. It is still a car capable of handling a daily commute, a weekend road trip or a run to the hardware store without sacrificing its performance credentials.

There are areas where the Type S could go further. Some switchgear and interior materials remain familiar from the standard Integra, and at this price point a few additional Type S-exclusive touches would have strengthened the sense of occasion. The infotainment system is straightforward and easy to operate, but it no longer feels class-leading compared with several European competitors.

Fuel economy proved to be another pleasant surprise. Natural Resources Canada rates the Integra Type S at 11.1 L/100 km in the city, 8.3 L/100 km on the highway and 9.9 L/100 km combined. During our week of mixed driving, we observed 8.8 L/100 km, considerably better than the official combined figure. It demonstrated that respectable efficiency and enthusiast-focused performance do not have to be mutually exclusive.

The 2026 Acura Integra Type S was never meant to recreate the GS-R or the DC2 Type R. Those cars belonged to a different era, powered by naturally aspirated B-series engines that built their reputation at the top of the tachometer. Today’s Integra writes its own chapter with the turbocharged K20C1, yet it captures the same philosophy that made those earlier cars so memorable: balance, driver engagement and engineering that always puts the person behind the wheel first.

For enthusiasts, the Integra has never simply been another model in Acura’s lineup. It is a name that carries history, expectation and more than a few memories. The standard Integra reopened the door. The 2026 Integra Type S finally walks through it.
