The iconic MINI Cooper continues to thrive in a brand-new fourth generation. It still maintains it’s familiar shape, now with new tech and upscale styling. MINI unveiled the electric version first last year, followed by the ICE version earlier this year.

The 2025 MINI Cooper S still features BMW’s 2.0L turbocharged, four-cylinder B48 engine, but it has been revised to produce 201 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. There will no longer be a manual transmission offered on MINIs, which is a huge blow for enthusiasts, but the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission shifts quickly and smoothly. We wish paddle shifters were equipped on the Cooper S to allow some control over the gears, but that will likely remain a JCW-exclusive feature. Handling feels like a MINI should, as the new Cooper sits on the same platform as the previous generation. Heavy steering feel is typical in a MINI, but this new model feels lighter and responds better in corners. Go-Kart Mode livens up the car, while Green Mode is optimized for efficient driving.

There have been mixed responses to the new MINI design. Overall, the new Cooper looks smoother and more streamlined, with a face that’s still recognizable. Our Cooper S has the optional Ocean Wave Green paint finish, contrasting white roof and mirror caps, and 18-inch wheels. The Favoured Style package adds light gold exterior accents, which MINI calls ‘Vibrant Silver,’ on the octagonal front grille and badges. A noticeable difference in the new model is the lack of the hood air intake, which the Cooper S was known for. The side scuttles, front bumper air inlets, and center-mounted exhaust are also gone. Circular LED headlights have been revised, but these reimagined Union Jack taillights resemble those of a superhero in Marvel. Three distinctive light signatures can be configured to your liking, while lighting animations when you unlock or lock the car retain its cheeky personality.

The big difference lies in its interior. In past MINIs, the interior has always been dominated by circles. The new model sports a cleaner, minimalist cabin and the world’s first 9.4-inch circular OLED MINI Operating System 9. The screen is vibrant and not distracting to use; it displays all the necessary information without clutter. Over time, MINI should optimize the system, as the new graphics, animations, and tech take some time to load. There is no gauge cluster in front of the steering wheel, but the heads-up display will show your speed if you don’t want to glance at the infotainment system.

The instrument panel and door trim are made from a knitted surface of recycled polyester, featuring a two-tone houndstooth pattern. New MINI Experience Modes create different atmospheres, as the projector units behind the screen show illuminated graphics alongside ambient lighting. The vegan Vescin Beige leather JCW sport seats keep you snug and feature power adjustments and a massage function for the driver. A heated steering wheel, Harman Kardon sound system, interior camera, wireless charging, and panoramic sunroof are included in the Cooper S. The rear seats are tight and only suitable for very short trips; fold them down, and you get up to 725 liters of space.

MINI features Spike, an English Bulldog, as a voice-activated assistant that operates many functions like the radio, climate, and navigation. Our Cooper S includes active blind-spot detection, lane departure warning, collision warning assistance, and exit warning. The Premier+ Line adds Driving Assistant Plus, Parking Assistant Plus, and MINI Navigation AR.
According to EnerGuide, the MINI Cooper S fuel economy is rated at 8.5 L/100 km in the city, 6.1 L/100 km on the highway, and 7.4 L/100 km combined. We achieved 8.5 L/100 km during the week with a good mix of driving modes.
For 2025, the MINI Cooper starts at $34,990 for the Cooper C and $39,990 for the Cooper S. Our tester model comes in at $46,590 with the Premier+ Line, Favoured Style, and paint color, before taxes and delivery.
The new-generation MINI Cooper is a delight. Even though the exterior design has been refreshed, it remains familiar to the eye. Handling for this hatchback is refined, with improved ride quality and a peppier motor. Its interior is upscale, and its new infotainment system outshines its competitors. Yes, there are some drawbacks to this new “go-kart,” but the MINI remains as charming as ever.
