From the moment you see it, the 2025 Chevrolet Tahoe Z71 makes no effort to hide what it is. Big, square, and confident, it stands as one of the last true body-on-frame SUVs left on the road. It doesn’t chase trends or try to feel smaller than it is. This thing was built to take space — in every sense.

Our week with the Tahoe Z71 spanned over 1,300 kilometres, loaded to the roof with luggage and gear. Through it all, it felt unbothered. Crosswinds as strong as 80km/h barely nudged it off course, and even on uneven roads, it remained smooth and sure-footed. There’s something undeniably satisfying about piloting a vehicle that feels this planted, this solid, and yet this comfortable over long distances.

Power comes from Chevrolet’s 6.2-litre L87 V8, producing 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft. of torque. It’s paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and a selectable four-wheel-drive system with a two-speed transfer case. The V8 delivers strong midrange torque, giving you all the confidence you need when overtaking or climbing hills. Acceleration is effortless, with the engine’s low, steady growl reminding you why naturally aspirated power still matters.

Even fully loaded, the Tahoe never felt strained. The 10-speed automatic shifts smoothly and predictably, finding the right gear every time. GM’s tuning gives it an easy rhythm — responsive when you need it, calm when you don’t. For a vehicle this size, throttle response is surprisingly natural, and that goes a long way when maneuvering something this large through city streets.

Fuel economy is what you’d expect from a big V8 SUV. Official NRCan ratings come in at 16.6L/100km city, 13.0L/100km highway, and 15.0L/100km combined. We averaged about 14.9L/100km during our mixed highway and backroad testing, which is fair considering the weight and load we carried. The 91-litre tank gives you decent range between stops, and given how comfortable the ride is, those long stretches on the road never feel tiring.

The Z71 trim adds more than just styling cues. You get a front skid plate, hill descent control, and 20-inch all-terrain tires. They look the part yet don’t compromise ride quality. The suspension soaks up rough pavement while staying composed through corners, and Magnetic Ride Control keeps body motion in check. The Tahoe leans, sure, but it never wallows. There’s a reassuring sense of control, whether cruising on the highway or navigating tight on-ramps.

Inside, the Tahoe mixes rugged appeal with upscale comfort. Our tester’s Jet Black and Mocha leather interior felt inviting, with plenty of support from the heated and ventilated seats. The driving position is commanding, visibility is excellent, and there’s ample space across all three rows. Second-row captain’s chairs make entry to the third row easy, and even adults will fit comfortably back there. Fold everything down, and you’re looking at an enormous cargo area that handled a full week’s worth of travel gear with room to spare.

Technology is straightforward and well executed. The 10.2-inch infotainment screen includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, backed by Google built-in services. It’s quick, intuitive, and bright, though the menu layout takes some time to memorize. The 12-inch digital gauge cluster and head-up display are crisp and useful. Audio comes through a 10-speaker Bose system — clear and balanced, if slightly lacking in low-end punch.

While our Z71 tester came equipped with plenty of creature comforts, it didn’t include Super Cruise or the rear entertainment package, which some might expect at this price. Those omissions are noticeable on paper, but in practice, the Tahoe still delivers on what matters most: comfort, power, and confidence.

Pricing for the 2025 Chevrolet Tahoe Z71 4WD starts at $88,999 CAD. Our Cypress Grey example, equipped with the 6.2-litre V8 and both Comfort and Technology Packages, came in at $107,733 before fees and taxes.

After a week behind the wheel, it’s clear why the Tahoe continues to be a favourite among families and long-distance travellers. It’s comfortable, capable, and effortlessly confident. The V8 gives it character, the chassis gives it control, and the cabin makes every kilometre feel easier. For anyone who still values a full-size SUV that drives like a truck but rides like a luxury cruiser, the Tahoe Z71 hits the mark.
