In the ever-evolving landscape of electric vehicles, Volvo continues to innovate with its latest offering, representing a bold leap into the future of sustainable mobility. As we focus this review on the 2024 Volvo C40 Recharge Twin, provided to us graciously by Volvo Canada, it seamlessly combines Scandinavian luxury with cutting-edge electric technology to deliver an unparalleled driving experience.

Drawing inspiration from Volvo’s commitment to minimalist elegance, the C40 Recharge boasts a sleek and aerodynamic design characterized by clean lines and a distinctive silhouette. The absence of a traditional front grille enhances its futuristic appeal, while signature Thor’s Hammer LED headlights illuminate the road ahead with striking clarity. Completing its dynamic look, the C40 Recharge features 20″ 5-Spoke Black Diamond Cut alloy wheels that not only elevate its aesthetic but also enhance its performance on the road.

Stepping inside the cabin, passengers are greeted by a spacious and luxurious interior crafted from premium materials such as sustainable wool blend upholstery and recycled plastics. The intuitive 9-inch infotainment touchscreen, powered by Volvo’s state-of-the-art Android Automotive operating system, seamlessly integrates with smartphones and provides access to a range of connected services and entertainment options. For those seeking the ultimate in luxury and convenience, the C40 Recharge Ultimate offers trim level options such as a panoramic roof, illuminated topography decor trim, and a premium Harman Kardon sound system, further enhancing the driving experience with sophistication and comfort.
Beneath its stylish exterior, the C40 Recharge harnesses the power of twin electric motors to deliver instant torque and exhilarating acceleration. With a combined output of 402 horsepower and all-wheel drive capability, this electric SUV effortlessly surges from 0 to 100km/h in just over 4.5 seconds, rivaling its gasoline-powered counterparts in performance.
Equipped with a 78 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, the C40 Recharge offers an impressive estimated range of 414 km on a single charge, making it an ideal choice for daily commutes and weekend getaways. With fast-charging capabilities, drivers can replenish up to 80% of the battery capacity in just 40 minutes, ensuring minimal downtime on the road.
True to Volvo’s reputation for innovation in safety technology, the C40 Recharge comes loaded with an array of advanced driver-assistance features, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking. Additionally, Volvo’s Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving system provides enhanced convenience and peace of mind on long journeys.
In terms of connectivity, the C40 Recharge offers seamless integration with Volvo’s digital ecosystem, allowing users to remotely monitor battery status, pre-condition the cabin temperature, and even schedule charging sessions from their smartphone or smartwatch.
Behind the wheel, the C40 Recharge delivers a refined driving experience characterized by smooth acceleration and responsive handling. The suspension effectively absorbs road imperfections, ensuring a comfortable ride for passengers.
The electric power steering provides precise control and maneuverability, communicating quite well with the driver and contributing to overall confidence on the road. While the C40 Recharge maintains a tranquil environment with minimal road and wind noise intrusion, some drivers may notice a slight increase in road noise at higher speeds, but for us, it remained a pleasantly quiet experience at normal cruising speeds.
For charging convenience, the C40 Recharge supports both Level 1, Level 2 AC charging, and DC fast charging. With our newly equipped smart Ivy Home Level 2 charger in the Driveman garage, the C40 gracefully charged from 20% to 80% in just about 6 hours at speeds up to 9.6 kW at 40 amps. While we didn’t have the opportunity to test at Level 1 (120V), it could take almost two days to charge from 20%.
The C40 allows for convenient replenishment at home or public stations, with DC fast charging enabling rapid charging on the go, with the ability to add significant range in just 40 minutes. Drivers can expect versatility and efficiency in charging, ensuring minimal downtime and maximum convenience during their journeys.
The 2024 Volvo C40 is offered in various configurations, each with its own pricing structure. Starting with the Core trim, prices begin at $59,950 for the single-motor variant and $63,500 for the Core Twin. Moving up to the Plus trim, you’ll find it priced at $68,000 for the single-motor model and $70,500 for the Twin. At the top end, the Ultimate trim is available for $72,250 with a single motor or $74,750 for the Twin, which was how our test vehicle was equipped for the week. Additionally, there are optional customization features such as the Onyx Black exterior paint, which costs $900, and a protection package priced at $635. This package includes all-weather floor mats, a cargo mat, a first-aid kit, and a few other goodies.
The 2024 Volvo C40 Recharge represents a significant milestone in Volvo’s journey towards a more sustainable and electrified future. With its striking design, exhilarating performance, and advanced technology, the C40 Recharge sets a new standard for electric luxury SUVs and reaffirms Volvo’s commitment to innovation, safety, and environmental stewardship. Whether navigating city streets or embarking on epic road trips, the C40 Recharge promises to deliver an unmatched combination of style, comfort, and efficiency for drivers who refuse to compromise on luxury or sustainability.
