The Toyota GR86, a beloved sports car known for its affordable performance and engaging driving experience, has received special treatment for the 2024 model year. The GR86 Trueno Edition, one of 50 in Canada, which we had the pleasure of experiencing thanks to Toyota Canada, pays homage to the iconic AE86 Trueno from the 1980s. This limited edition model not only enhances the impressive GR86 platform but also adds a touch of nostalgia that’s sure to appeal to enthusiasts and collectors alike.

At first glance, the GR86 Trueno Edition sets itself apart from the standard model with several visual enhancements. The most notable feature is the two-tone paint scheme, reminiscent of the original AE86 Trueno. Our test model was finished in “Track bRed” paint—a striking red contrasted by black mirrors and handles. The retro-inspired “Trueno” graphics along the lower doors further emphasized the car’s heritage while distinguishing it as a special edition.

Further in the realm of cosmetic enhancements, the Trueno Edition sports unique 18-inch alloy wheels with a design that echoes the original AE86’s iconic pepperpot wheels, albeit with a modern twist. These wheels, finished in a black metallic finish, perfectly complement the two-tone body. A subtle rear spoiler and special Trueno Edition badging on the front lip and rear trunk complete the exterior, striking a balance between nostalgia and contemporary sports car design.

Stepping inside the GR86 Trueno Edition reveals a cabin that blends modern amenities with retro-inspired touches. The sport seats feature a blend of “Ultrasuede” and contrasting red leather, providing a seating position behind the thin-rimmed, premium leather-wrapped steering wheel that is driver-centric with all controls within easy reach.

From a technology standpoint, the kit remains similar to the standard GR86, featuring an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Although this setup shows its age, all functions work adequately with little fuss or distraction from the main purpose of this sports car.

Under the hood, the GR86 Trueno Edition retains the standard model’s 2.4-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine, producing 228 horsepower at 7,000 RPM and 184 lb-ft of torque at 3,700 RPM. The 0 to 100 km/h figure is claimed to be around the 6.1-second mark, but unlike previous generations, the torque dip between 3,000 RPM to 4,000 RPM was imperceptible. In fact, it was in this range and above that the motor liked to hover and felt most alive.

From the interior, this motor produces an intake induction noise that makes you want to ease more into the throttle. From the outside, the stock exhaust is tame, although this can be remedied for more drama with an optional TRD Exhaust System and Intake.

The Trueno Edition comes exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission, which features a longer, but direct throw with just the right amount of notchiness. While all systems worked well in conjunction, the clutch left something to be desired from a weight and engagement standpoint; however, this gripe was instantly forgotten during more spirited driving.

The Trueno Edition receives a performance advantage from a specially tuned suspension setup with SACHS Dampers and larger, red-painted, 4-piston front and 2-piston rear Brembo brakes. Despite the upgraded dampers producing a firmer ride during daily city driving, the suspension enhanced composure through corners and allowed for sharper, more stable turn-in, making it incredibly direct in placing the car exactly where intended. The brakes offer strong bite for street driving, but the performance advantage from the Brembos would become more apparent while on track.

One of the GR86 Trueno Edition’s standout qualities is its perfectly balanced handling and 1,286-kilogram (2,837-pound) lightweight chassis. The combination of a low center of gravity, rear-wheel drive, and a limited-slip differential forms a recipe that’s both forgiving for novices and rewarding for experienced drivers. Riding on the stock Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires, which offer phenomenal grip, further enhanced the go-kart-like driving dynamics of the GR86.

While fuel efficiency is not typically a primary concern for sports car buyers, the GR86 Trueno Edition manages to deliver respectable economy figures. Toyota’s claimed fuel mileage is 11.9 L/100 km in the city and 8.7 L/100 km on the highway, but real-world combined mileage hovered around 12.5 L/100 km, skewed as a result of more spirited driving.

As a limited edition model, the GR86 Trueno Edition commands a premium over the standard GR86. However, given its unique styling elements and potential future collectibility, many enthusiasts may find the additional cost justified. If you can get your hands on one, the MSRP for the Trueno Edition is $42,145.08, which represents a $1,800 premium over the more mainstream Premium (AT) trim and a $3,800 premium over the Premium (MT) trim.

The 2024 Toyota GR86 Trueno Edition remains a driver’s car through and through, further improving an excellent platform. Its lightweight, sharp steering, and near-perfect 50-50 weight distribution contribute to a nimble go-kart-like driving experience that makes you want to hunt down winding roads.

Despite its humble power figures, this car enjoys being revved out—further contributing to bliss behind the wheel and allowing one to easily overlook shortfalls like the small 178-liter (6.3 cubic feet) trunk. This makes it a viable option for enthusiasts who yearn for a sublime drive from a sports car that delivers performance without excessive running costs. And for the purists, the Trueno Edition’s blend of nostalgic design elements pays tribute to a legend of Toyota’s past.
