From Gran Turismo garages to Fast & Furious fantasies, it’s been a poster car for generations of gearheads. Its 1990s tuner-era dominance cemented it as a legend, and its modern return—developed in collaboration with BMW—sparked both praise and debate. Now, Toyota marks 45 years of Supra with a limited-edition model aimed at purists: the 2024 GR Supra 45th Anniversary Edition. Finished in Plasma Orange with a manual transmission and subtle aero upgrades, it’s a car that leans into driving connection over digital distraction.

Thanks to Toyota Canada, we spent a week with the 45th Anniversary Edition. It’s well-sorted, balanced, and built for drivers.

Under the hood sits BMW’s B58 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six, producing 382 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque at 1,800RPM. It’s a smooth, torque-heavy engine that pulls hard in the midrange, with plenty of usable power for real-world driving. It doesn’t feel wild or explosive, but it’s responsive and linear—easy to modulate on backroads or highway ramps. The six-speed manual transmission is well-matched to the platform. Throws are short and mechanical, and the clutch is easy to live with, striking a nice middle ground between sporty and forgiving. Rev-matching can be toggled off if you prefer full control.

On the road, the Supra still impresses with how buttoned-down it feels. The steering is light at low speeds but firms up predictably as pace builds. It’s quick without being twitchy, and the front end tracks with precision through corners. Thanks to the adaptive variable suspension, front strut tower brace, and active rear sport differential, the Supra stays flat and composed when pushed. It’s not raw like older JDM icons, but it communicates well enough to keep you engaged.

From the outside, the active exhaust system gives the Supra a subtle edge—especially in Sport mode, where you’ll get a few burbles and a deeper tone under throttle. Inside, it’s more restrained. Some of the sound is enhanced through the speakers, but it blends in well and never feels overdone. It’s not a car that screams for attention, and that low-key nature suits its personality.

Inside, the cabin is clean and driver-focused. The 8.8-inch infotainment screen is based on BMW’s previous-generation iDrive. It’s not the flashiest system out there, but it’s familiar and easy to navigate once you get used to the layout. The rotary controller works well for quick inputs, and while the screen isn’t as sharp or customizable as some newer systems, it gets the job done without distraction.

The 12-speaker JBL system delivers decent clarity for casual listening. It’s not going to blow you away, but it fills the cabin with enough sound for most day-to-day use. Enthusiasts looking for something more immersive may still prefer an aftermarket solution, but it suits the car’s mission well enough.

The Alcantara-trimmed sport seats offer excellent support and 14-way adjustability for both front occupants. Materials are solid throughout, with carbon fibre accents and a proper GR-branded shift knob reminding you this isn’t just another badge exercise.

Compared to rivals, the 2024 GR Supra 45th Anniversary Edition still feels like a serious performance tool. The Nissan Z Performance offers more personality out of the box and feels more playful at lower speeds, which some drivers—myself included—may prefer. That said, the Supra feels more polished and planted, with sharper composure through corners. The Civic Type R is the better daily companion, but it doesn’t match the Supra’s rear-wheel drive balance or classic coupe proportions. Each takes a different approach, and where the Supra excels is in delivering precision and predictability.

Ride quality is firm, especially in Sport, and rearward visibility is poor. Cargo space is limited, but those are the expected tradeoffs in a low-slung two-door coupe.

Fuel economy is officially rated at 11.0L/100km city and 7.7L/100km highway. We observed 10.2L/100km combined during a week of mixed-use driving.

The 2024 GR Supra 45th Anniversary Edition isn’t trying to reinvent the formula—and that’s a big part of its appeal. It’s a proper celebration of a nameplate that’s meant a lot to a lot of people. It drives cleanly, looks special, and offers enough connection to remind you why sports cars still matter. And while it wears a Toyota badge, there’s no hiding the German heart underneath—engine, infotainment, and all.
