Before delving into our firsthand experience with the 2024 Toyota Corolla Hatchback XSE, generously provided by Toyota Canada Inc., a brief synopsis of the Corolla’s history offers insight into how the 2024 model seamlessly combines Toyota’s long-standing heritage with innovation in the compact hatchback arena.

Making an entry to the market in 1983, the Hatchback evolved the line-up from its traditional sedan design. This move reflected a strategic response to shifting market dynamics and the growing hatchback trend of the ’80s. Beyond its historical significance, the Hatchback’s emergence addressed the practical need for compact yet spacious vehicles, resonating with consumers valuing fuel efficiency and urban maneuverability. Fast forward to the present, and it’s evident that the 2024 Toyota Corolla Hatchback XSE retains much of its original winning formula addressing the demands of today’s compact-segment consumer.

For 2024, Toyota offers the Corolla Hatchback in four trim levels. The XSE, as reviewed here, stands as the flagship model in Toyota’s standard hatchback line-up – excluding the GR-Corolla (reviewed here) which inhabits a class of its own. Finished in a two-tone exterior colour, the lower half of the body wears Finish Line Red paint while a Black Roof encapsulates the greenhouse. Mirrors and trim are also accented in black perpetuating an elegant yet sporty-motif. The LED headlights and fog lights – which produce an excellent ray of light during night driving – in conjunction with the mesh grille contribute to the car’s aggressive yet modern demeanor.

Stepping into the cabin, the two-tone theme continues, with supportive bucket seats adorned in a mix of Grey Soft-Tex fabric and black leather bolsters. The 8-way power-adjustable and heated driver seat along with the heated steering wheel enhance the experience from behind the wheel. Surprisingly absent from the range-topping model is a sunroof, but thanks to the expansive windshield and well-sized passenger windows, the cabin remains bright and airy. Once settled in, it takes very little time to get acquainted with all the features, functions and controls. The intuitive layout of buttons, dual-zone climate control, and high-quality fit and finish throughout reinforce the premium feel of the XSE model.

The focal point within the cabin is the eight-inch infotainment touchscreen, flanked by discreet air vents, offering easy accessibility for both the driver and passenger. Navigating the interface proves effortless, with a display that remains crisp, clear, and vibrant under various lighting conditions. Simplifying connectivity, the system supports both wireless and wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Within the cabin are three distinct USB-C charging ports—two for rear passengers and one conveniently located next to the glovebox for those in the front. Utilizing the USB-C port adjacent to the glovebox serves the dual purpose of charging and connecting to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. This port, offering a more reliable connection, also outperforms the wireless charging tray tucked under the climate control panel. While the wireless tray accommodates even the largest phones, it struggles with adequately charging a device in use – occasionally leading to discharging when running applications in tandem like Google Maps and Spotify.

A standout feature of the XSE is the 8-Speaker JBL Audio System which creates a studio-like listening experience. Audiophiles will particularly appreciate this well-tuned system, offering crisp vocals and deep bass. Regardless of whether it’s classical music or pop, the system will captivate all listeners in the car, creating a distinct separation from the outside world and transforming the cabin into an immersive jam session.

Beneath the hood lies a 2.0L 4-Cylinder engine generating 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft. of torque, paired with a CVT for an economical and smooth driving experience. Through three drive modes—Eco, Normal, and Sport— adaptability in accelerator responsiveness is provided, influencing fuel economy figures for better or worse. For short, laid-back drives, Eco is the preferred choice due to its somewhat leisurely acceleration. On the other hand, the Sport mode, with its immediate and lively throttle response, simplifies swift maneuvers and passing on the highway. However, as anticipated and later confirmed, holding higher revs in the rev range under Sport mode does have a negative impact on fuel economy.

Toyota claims fuel economy figures of 7.5L/100KM in the city, 5.9L/100km on the highway, and a combined 6.8L/100KM. However, during the test, the vehicle equipped with Bridgestone WS-90 winter tires on the XSE 18-inch Gunmetal wheels, demonstrated slightly lower real-world mileage, averaging around 8.6L/100KM.

While it might be attributed to a placebo effect, Sport mode appeared to also enhance the feedback from the Electrical Power Steering. Regarding steering feel, on-center steering lacked substantial feedback, however, when negotiating turns there was commendable load-up and weight, instilling confidence in corners and wet conditions. Contributing to the driving experience, the front and rear stabilizer bars, coupled with the multi-link rear suspension, ensured the Corolla’s confident stance and underscored Toyota’s decision to use this chassis as the foundation for the GR-Corolla. The overall ride quality remained comfortably compliant, particularly in urban settings.

Uncompromising on safety, the 2024 Toyota Corolla Hatchback XSE features Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 which includes Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Tracing Assist, a Pre-Collision System, Road Sign recognition, and Vehicle Blindspot Detection along with Rear Cross Traffic Alert. A much appreciated convenience feature is the built-in remote engine start which proves convenient for creating a cozy cabin and defrosting windows during inclement Canadian winter weather. Although it requires proximity to the vehicle, activating the system occurs with a quick one-two press of the lock button followed by a longer 3 second press.

Pricing for the 2024 Corolla Hatchback starts at $26,964.50 for the base SE (Standard Package). Progressing through the hatchback line-up, the XSE represents a $5,959.50 premium with an MSRP of $32,924.00 inclusive of the $795 upgrade for the two-tone paint on the test vehicle.

Overall, the 2024 Toyota Corolla Hatchback XSE presents a compelling option for both first-time car buyers and savvy shoppers. Boasting a balanced combination of reliability, advanced technology, and safety features, it appeals to a wide audience. The Corolla Hatchback XSE underscores an excellent value proposition that distinguishes itself as a strong choice, offering a well-rounded package that excels in performance, practicality, and overall economy.
