As the sixth-generation 2025 Toyota 4Runner is set to hit the market this fall, it’s worth taking a moment to reflect on the 15-year run of the current generation. The 4Runner is an iconic model for Toyota, backed by an extremely loyal fanbase. It’s the traditional, beefy SUV that many know and love. Back in 2017, Toyota added the 4Runner to its TRD Pro lineup, offering upgrades designed to enhance its off-road capabilities.

To celebrate this milestone, we had the opportunity, courtesy of Toyota Canada, to drive the 2024 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro. Under the hood is its tried-and-true 4.0L V6 engine, producing 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque, with a towing capacity of 5,000 lbs. Driving this body-on-frame SUV feels like stepping back in time, as the driving dynamics are quite dated compared to modern 4x4s. While it’s not particularly fast, the engine and five-speed automatic transmission deliver a smooth experience. On-road handling is decent, though the engine sounds strained during hard acceleration, there is noticeable brake dive, and the ride quality is surprisingly stiff.

However, everything changes off-road. The TRD Pro builds on the TRD Off-Road trim, adding features like crawl control, multi-terrain select, TRD-tuned front coil and rear leaf springs, FOX shock absorbers, a locking rear differential, multi-terrain ABS, a front skid plate, and rock rails. We tackled deep puddles, thick mud, and soft sand, all of which the TRD Pro navigated with ease.

Our midsize SUV came in a new color called Terra, and sported 17-inch TRD wheels with Nitto A/T tires. The TRD Pro is the best-looking model in the lineup, with exterior black accents, a basket-style roof rack, and a hood scoop with matte black detailing that enhance its rugged, adventure-ready appearance. It also boasts an approach angle of 33 degrees, a departure angle of 26 degrees, and a breakover angle of 19.8 degrees, along with 9.8 inches of ground clearance.

The interior of the 4Runner is outdated compared to modern SUVs, but it serves its purpose well. Everything is functional, with large knobs and buttons that are easy to reach and use. An eight-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility sits at the center of the cockpit, though it can feel sluggish, and the multi-terrain monitor’s visual quality is rather grainy.

Despite its dated design, the 4Runner remains a very comfortable SUV, featuring well-padded seats and excellent outward visibility. Heated front seats and a heated steering wheel come standard, with power adjustments for both front seats. A standout feature is the power tailgate window, which reduces wind buffeting when all the windows are down and is a favorite among dog owners. It also offers convenience for dropping items into the trunk without opening the entire tailgate. Cargo space behind the second row is 1,337 liters, expanding to 2,837 liters with the 40/20/40 seats folded down.

While this generation of the 4Runner doesn’t come equipped with the latest Toyota Safety Sense technology, standard safety features include pre-collision avoidance support, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams.

According to Toyota, the 4Runner’s fuel economy is rated at 14.8L/100KM in the city, 13.8L/100KM on the highway, for a combined 12.5L/100KM. Given its off-road prowess, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that it’s a bit thirsty; we matched the city rating during our week of testing.

The base 4Runner starts at $63,794, with the TRD Sport priced at $67,432, the TRD Off-Road at $68,777, the Limited 7-Passenger at $72,212, and our TRD Pro at $81,026, including taxes and delivery.

For some, the fifth-generation 4Runner may not justify its cost, as the SUV is undeniably outdated. However, if you’re willing to overlook the dated infotainment system and its lackluster fuel efficiency, there’s a lot to appreciate about this vehicle. The 4Runner is capable and has a long history of reliability. Its body-on-frame design and user-friendly 4WD system are well-loved by owners. It offers a spacious cabin, and the interior materials feel durable. The 4Runner remains a recognizable and dependable choice for families and adventure seekers alike.
