Rooted in its World Rally Championship origins, the Subaru WRX epitomizes automotive performance with turbocharged power, agile dynamics, and the distinctive growl of its boxer engine. In this in-depth review of the 2023 model, our objective is to impartially explore Subaru’s dedication to performance engineering and how it resonates with a broader audience. The 2023 Subaru WRX Sport-Tech packs a punch with its 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engine (FA24), generating 271 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Noteworthy is the availability of Subaru’s Performance Transmission (SPT), an improved version of Subaru’s Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), providing smooth acceleration that complements the turbocharged engine’s power delivery.
Found in the WRX is Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel-drive system, setting it apart and offering excellent traction and stability across varied driving conditions. The sport-tuned suspension and precise steering contribute to a responsive and engaging driving experience, making the WRX adept at handling twists and turns.
On the twisties, the WRX truly shines, showcasing sharp turn-in and impressive cornering capabilities. The combination of all-wheel drive and a well-tuned suspension system provides a nimble and agile driving experience. The chassis responds eagerly to driver inputs, and the precise steering offers excellent feedback, instilling confidence in navigating challenging turns. The WRX’s performance makes it a standout choice for enthusiasts seeking a dynamic driving experience.
In urban environments, the WRX’s compact sedan dimensions and responsive nature make it a practical choice. The turbocharged engine’s ample low-end torque facilitates easy navigation through traffic. The SPT, tailored for city commuting, ensures smooth acceleration and a hassle-free experience in stop-and-go traffic. Despite the sport-tuned suspension transmitting road imperfections more noticeably, the WRX provides a comfortable and engaging city driving experience.
In the fiercely contested performance-oriented compact sedan segment, the 2023 Subaru WRX goes head-to-head with formidable rivals such as the Volkswagen Golf R, Honda Civic Type R, and Acura Integra Type S. What distinguishes the WRX is its well-established symmetrical all-wheel-drive system. While the Golf R also features its version of the AWD system (4MOTION), the WRX holds a notable advantage. Despite some competitors touting higher horsepower figures or alternative transmission options, it’s the WRX’s distinctive fusion of turbocharged power and all-wheel drive that truly sets it apart, positioning the model as an exceptional choice within its class.
Stepping inside, the WRX offers a driver-focused cockpit with supportive sport seats and a functional layout. While the interior materials may not match luxury competitors, they suit the performance-oriented nature of the vehicle. The cabin is relatively quiet, providing a comfortable environment for daily commuting and spirited driving.
The WRX’s infotainment system features a touchscreen display with seamless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Standard features, including dual-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and sporty accents, enhance the overall driving experience.
Safety is a priority for Subaru, and the 2023 WRX comes equipped with Subaru’s EyeSight driver-assistance suite. This includes adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, and lane-keeping assist, adding an extra layer of security to the driving experience.
The WRX maintains a competitive fuel economy rating of 11.2L/100km, with an estimated city fuel consumption of 12.7L/100km and highway fuel consumption of 9.4L/100km. During our test period, we recorded a return of 9.7L/100km, which met our satisfaction. These figures underscore a respectable blend of efficiency and performance within its class, especially in conjunction with the car’s symmetrical all-wheel-drive system. It’s worth noting that the recommended fuel for this car is 91-octane.
The 2023 Subaru WRX is available in three trims: Base, Sport, and Sport-tech, with a starting price of $32,495. Our test model was the Sport-tech, specifically equipped with the SPT transmission, and it comes with a price tag of $43,995. This lineup provides diverse options for consumers, catering to different preferences and needs at varying price points.
