The Mazda MX-5, a beloved roadster with a history dating back to 1989, has always been synonymous with pure driving pleasure. Known by most enthusiasts as the Miata, our friends at Mazda Canada Inc. graciously offered us the 2023 Mazda MX-5 RF GT for a week of testing. This retractable hard-top, sporting the elegant Zircon Sand Metallic paint, is a timeless symbol of open-air driving with a touch of sophistication.

At the heart of the MX-5 RF GT is the robust Skyactiv-G 2.0-litre in-line four-cylinder engine, delivering a potent 181 horsepower at 7,000 RPM and 151 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 RPM. This engine’s willingness to rev all the way to the redline underscores its character. The MX-5 offers a choice between a 6-speed automatic transmission and a 6-speed manual transmission, the latter providing a beautifully weighted clutch and a short-throw shifter for an engaging driving experience.
The MX-5 RF GT comes equipped with sport-tuned suspension and Bilstein shock absorbers, delivering an exhilarating ride, particularly when navigating tight corners at high speeds. The responsive rack-and-pinion, engine-speed-sensing power-assisted steering adds to the car’s impressive handling, forging a strong connection between the driver and the road.
Inside the MX-5 RF GT, the seats provide ample bolstering and padding for comfort during spirited drives. For those seeking additional support, the sport package offers optional Recaro seats. However, it’s worth noting that the transmission tunnel does create a substantial bump in the passenger floor, which may slightly compromise legroom for passengers.
The soft-top MX-5 comes in GS, GS-P, and GT trims, with prices ranging from $33,900 for the GS to $41,400 for the GT. In contrast, RF models start at $40,900 for the GS-P and go up to $44,000 for the GT. Our as-tested 2023 Mazda MX-5 RF GT, with the only added option being the Zircon Sand Metallic paint, was priced at $44,250.
Despite its performance prowess, the MX-5 RF GT manages to deliver commendable fuel efficiency. During our city and highway tests, we achieved an impressive 6.7L/100km. Mazda’s claimed fuel economy figures of 9.0L/100km in the city and 7.0L/100km on the highway may seem ambitious, but the MX-5’s Skyactiv-G technology and lightweight chassis work in harmony to maintain its efficiency, even when requiring 91-octane fuel.
The cabin of the MX-5 RF GT boasts a user-friendly, minimalist design. The central seven-inch colour touchscreen, controlled via the HMI Commander, seamlessly integrates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. While the rotary dial may take some getting used to, voice commands simplify navigation through menus.
One standout feature of the MX-5 RF GT is its power retractable roof, which can be operated effortlessly. It takes approximately 15 seconds for the roof to smoothly retract or close, providing drivers with the convenience of transforming their driving experience at the push of a button.
Another highlight of the interior is undoubtedly the nine-speaker Bose sound system, complete with headrest speakers. This audio system delivers a brilliant listening experience, whether you’re cruising leisurely or pushing the MX-5 to its limits. It ensures a remarkable representation of sound fields across all musical genres. Notably, the headrest speakers make phone calls much clearer when the top is open.
While the MX-5 RF GT may not boast the highest horsepower and torque figures among its competitors, it doesn’t need to. It’s about the experience, the connection between driver and machine, and the sheer joy of driving. For those seeking a daily driver with a short-throw shifter and perfectly positioned pedals for effortless heel-toe manoeuvres, the 2023 Mazda MX-5 RF GT is the epitome of driving pleasure. It’s a car that leaves you yearning for more, a testament to Mazda’s continued commitment to the MX-5 legacy—one that is truly worth embracing.
