Mazda has truly outdone themselves in creating an SUV lineup that is both versatile and impressive. With options like the CX-30, CX-5, CX-50, CX-9, and the much-anticipated CX-90, there is something for everyone. In this review, we’ll be focusing on the CX-9, a top-of-the-line 3-row SUV that will leave you in awe. We were lucky enough to get behind the wheel of the 2023 Mazda CX-9 Signature for a week, thanks to our generous friends at Mazda Canada.

Slipping into the driver’s seat of our 2023 Mazda CX-9 Signature test vehicle was a treat. Its sleek Machine Grey Metallic finish and 20-inch alloy wheels caught our eye, while the impressive Bose 12-speaker premium audio system, 10.25-inch color display equipped with Mazda Connect, and plush Nappa leather upholstery made us feel like we were in a premium luxury vehicle.

Under the hood of the Mazda CX-9 lies a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder SKYACTIV-G engine that’s paired with an automatic 6-speed transmission. With 93-octane fuel, the engine generates 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. However, if you opt for 87-octane fuel, expect the output to drop to 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Despite the fact that most transmissions in today’s market have 8–10 speeds, the CX-9’s six-speed automatic transmission is highly capable and changes gears smoothly without causing any noticeable hiccups. Throughout our testing period on a mix of highway and city roads, we were impressed with how the engine and transmission worked together to provide seamless and powerful acceleration.
Mazda has incorporated the G-Vectoring Control Plus (GVC Plus) system in the CX-9, which adjusts engine torque in response to steering inputs. By momentarily reducing torque during turns, the system shifts weight towards the front wheels and increases tire grip, improving stability and control. GVC Plus quickly restores torque after the turn is completed, providing a seamless and imperceptible enhancement to the driving experience. This technology is consistent with Mazda’s signature driving performance across their entire lineup, proving that SUVs can still be fun for grown-ups.

The CX-9 Signature comes equipped with a modern and sleek 10.25-inch infotainment display featuring Mazda Connect. Connecting your device to the USB port can easily access wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto. The display can be controlled through a combination of touch and physical controls on the well-placed center console. With a Bose 12-speaker premium audio system and subwoofer, the CX-9 Signature delivers clear and balanced sound with deep bass reproduction. Overall, the infotainment and audio systems in the CX-9 Signature offer a modern, intuitive, and premium experience.
The ride is extremely comfortable for short and long drives thanks to the power-adjustable Nappa leather front seats with ample support and bolstering. The second and third-row captain seats provide adequate legroom and can comfortably seat four grown adults. With the rear seats folded down, the CX-9 Signature also provides ample cargo space, with 2,017 liters available behind the front seats, 1,082 liters behind the second-row seats, and 407 liters behind the third-row seats.
The CX-9 is available in various trim levels, ranging from the base GS model starting at $42,050 to the top-of-the-line Signature model at $54,050. In between, there’s the GS-L model priced at $45,800, the GT model at $51,050, and the Kuro model at $52,650. Note that the prices mentioned above exclude destination, taxes, and other fees.
The 2023 Mazda CX-9, according to Mazda Canada, has an expected fuel economy of 11.6L/100km in the city, 9.1L/100km on the highway, and 10.5L/100km combined, and is designed to run on 87-octane fuel with its 74-litre fuel tank. However, actual fuel efficiency may vary depending on driving conditions and habits. In our testing, we found that the CX-9 achieved a combined fuel economy of 9.7L/100km over the course of 600 km during our week long test drive.
The 2023 Mazda CX-9 Signature is a strong contender in the mid-size SUV segment, offering a spacious and luxurious cabin, powerful engine, and respectable fuel economy. Families and individuals seeking a reliable daily driver will find the CX-9 a compelling choice. While some competitors, such as the Toyota 4Runner or Jeep Grand Cherokee, may offer more off-road capability, the CX-9 Signature’s well-equipped and stylish design sets it apart. Overall, the CX-9 Signature is a great option for drivers who prioritize comfort, practicality, and sophistication in their mid-size SUV.
