The Grand Wagoneer nameplate dates back to 1962, and while the 2024 Grand Wagoneer L Series III carries forward the full-size body, it leaves the wood paneling in the past. The new Grand Wagoneer brings an air of opulence and luxuriousness to its original moniker. Thanks to Stellantis Canada, we had the privilege to experience the range topping Grand Wagoneer  L Series III for a week. From its commanding presence on the road to its meticulously crafted interior, the Grand Wagoneer L Series III sets a new standard for premium American SUVs.

The Grand Wagoneer L Series III commands attention whether moving or parked with it’s chrome accents and striking 22-inch chrome wheels. Finished in a luxurious Ember Pearl paint that appears burgundy under the sun, and a black painted roof, the two-tone aesthetic turns heads. Notably, the absence of Jeep branding adds to its allure, positioning the Grand Wagoneer L Series III in a class of its own and representing Jeep’s foray into the high-end, full-size luxury SUV segment.

The “L” in the brand designation is immediately apparent with an extended wheelbase that stretches 7-inches longer than the Grand Wagoneer, and a full 12-inches longer in overall length, respectively. While a foot may not seem like much for a vehicle of this size, the added length is appreciated by third row passengers given the additional legroom it allows as well as the 1252 L (44.2 cubic feet) of cargo space behind the third row. Notably, with second and third row seats folded, a 4-by-8 could fit comfortably although we did not venture to try in fear of scuffing the beautifully appointed interior.

Stepping into the interior of the Grand Wagoneer L Series III is facilitated by power deployable running boards, and upon entry, one is greeted by a tailored beige “Tupelo” leather interior. This color scheme enhances the feeling of spaciousness within an already airy cabin, courtesy of a panoramic sunroof and third-row sunroof. Boasting the optional “embossed metal interior accents” – a patterned brushed silver trim – throughout the interior, along with gloss black finishes, brings a touch of modern flair especially when complemented by the five-color customizable ambient lighting. Heated and ventilated, 24-way adjustable front massage seats, transformed long commutes into indulgent experiences, offering comfort and relaxation that truly was appreciated.

Elevating the driving experience is an impressive array of technology that immerses occupants in a world of convenience and entertainment. Anchoring the experience is a crisp 12-inch display, offering intuitive control over all the Grand Wagoneer’s systems. From the innovative “Fam Cam”, providing a clear view of both rear seating rows, to Night Vision illuminating the road ahead via the 12.3-inch Digital Gauge Cluster Display, the Grand Wagoneer L Series III comes loaded with all the technology expected in a vehicle of this caliber.

Passengers, excluding those in the third row, are treated to personalized entertainment experiences through integrated displays in the dashboard and driver-passenger seat backs. These 10.25-inch displays feature Amazon Fire TV built-in, and with up to 11 USB ports counted within the interior, connectivity and access to desired media is seamless. Further elevating the traveling experience, the McIntosh MX1375 Reference Audio System boasts an impressive 23 speakers, delivering unparalleled audio quality with deep bass and clear vocals. In conjunction with its acoustic laminated glass double-pane windows, it truly feels like a transcendence into a different world.

The Grand Wagoneer L Series III prioritizes safety with a comprehensive suite of advanced driver assistance and crash mitigation features. The Heads-Up Display and Active Driving Assist System, coupled with Blind-Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross-Path Detection, ensure all essential information remains within the driver’s field of view, fostering confidence on the road. Additional features like Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Full-Speed Forward Collision Warning Plus, and Pedestrian/Cyclist emergency braking provide peace of mind in various driving scenarios. The vehicle also incorporates convenience features such as the Park-Sense automated parking system and Rain-Sensing Windshield Wipers. Together, these features work harmoniously to navigate a vehicle of this size safely down the road.

The 2024 Grand Wagoneer L Series III defies expectations with its potent 3.0L I-6 Hurricane Twin Turbo 510 engine, delivering an impressive 510 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque. Despite its size, the vehicle exhibits surprising agility, thanks in part to the Quadra-Lift® air suspension system. While the 22-inch wheels may result in a slightly harsher ride over bumps, the adaptive damping suspension and the five height settings of the air suspension ensure a plush ride under normal conditions. Equipped with an Electronic Rear Limited Differential and well-tuned electronic power steering, the Grand Wagoneer confidently navigates tight turns, effectively masking its substantial 3040-kilogram (6,704-pound) curb weight. This dynamic combination results in a driving experience that pleasantly surpasses expectations, all without the need for a V8 engine.

Thanks to the Hurricane motor equipped across all Grand Wagoneer L’s, there are relative improvements in fuel efficiency over the V8 powertrain, though modest given the vehicle’s size and weight. The Grand Wagoneer L achieves fuel economy figures of 12.5L/100 KM on the highway and 17.0L/100 KM in the city. However, our real-world test in mixed conditions revealed a fuel consumption of 14.8L/100 KM. The vehicle does employ unique features such as grille shutters and an “Aero” mode, whereby the suspension is lowered by 0.6 inches while traveling at higher rates of speed, significantly reducing fuel consumption on longer highway commutes.

The price tag for the 2024 Grand Wagoneer L matches the opulence it delivers, with the Grand Wagoneer L lineup now starting at $136,018 for the Series II Obsidian, $145,113 for the Series III, and $147,513 for the Series III Obsidian. Optional upgrades on the 2023 model tested included the now discontinued Ember Pearl paint ($695), Metal Interior Accents ($995), Rear Seat Entertainment Package ($2,695, but now a free option on the 2024 Series III), and the 22-inch wheels ($1,995), representing an as-tested price of $140,670 before taxes.

In conclusion, the 2023 Grand Wagoneer L Series III emerges as the perfect vehicle for families who seek spaciousness, embark on frequent road trips, and have a penchant for luxurious travel during long commutes. Excelling in comfort, technology, and safety, while also boasting class-leading cargo space, the Grand Wagoneer L seamlessly integrates advanced features with opulent design and practicality. Despite facing stiff competition in its segment, such as the Cadillac Escalade, for those who appreciate heritage, versatility, and sophistication, the Grand Wagoneer L Series III stands as a compelling choice, promising unforgettable journeys and experiences.
