There are a lot of pickup trucks on the market, but the Ford F-150 has been a top seller for years. Keeping this household name current in the modern era spawned a fully electric version, the F-150 Lightning, and Ford is now offering a hybrid option for the fuel-efficient conscious.

This new hybrid powertrain features Ford’s twin-turbo 3.5L Ecoboost V6 and a 35kW electric motor (47 horsepower), producing 430 horsepower and 570 lb-ft of torque. With this much power, this truck doesn’t feel heavy at all when accelerating. Ford calls this powertrain PowerBoost, with the electric motor and 1.5 kWh battery pack, the F150 features enhanced fuel economy and a towing capacity of 12,700 pounds. In city driving, the truck can operate in EV only mode, and we have experienced smooth transitions to gas-powered driving when we need a little more power. A 10-speed automatic transmission is paired with this hybrid powertrain.

Our 2023 Ford F-150 Limited PowerBoost is insanely luxurious. The Limited comes in the SuperCrew cab setup and a 5.5” bed. Our tester features the Azure Grey metallic tricoat paint finish, which looks great with all of its large chrome exterior pieces and 22-inch wheels. Just because it looks flashy, this is still a workhorse. You get a power tailgate with a tailgate step that folds out for easy access into the bed. There is also Ford’s BoxLink cargo management system and 360-degree zone lighting. Standard on the Limited is the Onboard Scale with Smart Hitch, which is a very helpful feature when loading your cargo properly. The Limited has a maximum payload of 1830 pounds; when you look in the infotainment system, the truck can tell you the weight that you are carrying. On the outside, the taillight will also indicate the approximate weight. Our tester has the available 7.2kW Pro Power Onboard that lets you operate power tools on the job or any electronics when you’re out having fun.

Stepping inside this truck is easy with standard power-deployable side steps. Once you’re in, you notice how incredibly airy it is with its large windows and twin-panel moonroof. The Admiral Blue quilted leather seats are comfy to be in; front passengers get heated and ventilated seats, while the rear only gets heated. You can also work in here; press a button to get the gear lever to stow away and flip the centre console top over to create a flat work surface for your laptop or notepad. With a vehicle this size, it can sometimes be daunting to drive, but the F-150 is like a cloud. The cabin is quiet, the suspension does a good job soaking up bumps, and the steering feel is responsive and light.

There is a lot of technology fitted into this truck. We have a 12-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12-inch Sync 4 infotainment system, both of which provide clear graphics and are easy to navigate. This tester is also fitted with an 18-speaker B&O sound system that includes speakers in the headliner and front headrests. Standard safety equipment includes a 360-degree camera, front and rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, Pro Trailer backup assist, and Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist 2.0.

According to Energuide, the fuel economy is rated 10.5L/100KM city, 10.4L/100KM highway, for a combined 10.4L/100KM. For a truck, these numbers are impressive, and if you tend to do a lot more city driving, the PowerBoost powertrain is going to be beneficial. We’ve achieved 11.8L/100KM during our week of testing.

At the time of review, our 2023 Ford F-150 Limited PowerBoost starts at $106,285. On top of destination and delivery, the optional paint colour and spray-in bedliner gives the truck a total MSRP of $108,915.

The 2023 Ford F-150 Limited PowerBoost proves that a full-hybrid truck is doable. You might not see this particular one on a jobsite, but the six-figure price tag doesn’t diminish the capabilities of a work truck. We love how easy it is to drive, and it’s a great, luxurious family vehicle with all the space you need. The hybrid powertrain is refined and comfortable on long drives. If your pockets are deep enough, this is a truck that ticks off a lot of boxes.
