The compact SUV segment is always brimming with competition. Nissan’s best-selling model, the Rogue, has been popular with consumers, and with a redesign due in 2021, things should look up from here.

We got the 2022 Nissan Rogue Platinum from Nissan Canada for the week to see what this new generation model brings to the table. The Rogue Platinum is fitted with a new 1.5L 3-cylinder turbocharged engine producing 201 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque at 2,800-4,000RPM. This engine has variable compression technology, which allows the engine to adjust its compression ratio, improving acceleration and efficiency. Three cylinders might seem lacking for an SUV, but we find that there’s plenty of power. The turbo works quickly when you need to pass, and the CVT transmission is pretty smooth, but overall, there’s nothing sporty about it. That isn’t necessarily a con as it’s comfortable over bumpy roads and delivers a quiet ride, but it can benefit with more responsive steering for an engaging drive. Our Rogue comes standard with AWD and has a towing capacity of 1,500 pounds (680 kilograms).

The redesign for the Rogue works very well, with its squared-off profile, big V-Motion front grille, and split LED headlights. Our model has a two-tone Caspian Blue Metallic paint job with a Super Black roof, 19″ alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, and a rear spoiler. The Rogue looks more premium than its predecessor and is sculpted better with revised hood lines, stronger shoulder lines, and lower body contours. We also like that Nissan’s updated logo is on the vehicle, which appears quite sleek.

You’ll find three displays inside the Rogue: a 12.3-inch driver’s display, a nine-inch NissanConnect touch-screen display, and a large head-up display. Each display is easy to configure and is positioned close together so it’s easy to read and you don’t spend a lot of time fussing over what type of information you need to see. Wireless Apple CarPlay worked flawlessly, and there’s even a wireless charging pad right in front of the shifter. Our Platinum trim level has a 10-speaker Bose Premium Audio system that delivers great quality for whatever music you’re listening to. The Rogue has a terrain selector with five available modes: Off-Road, Snow, Auto, Eco, and Sport.

Comfortable quilted semi-aniline leather seats with standard 8-way power driver’s seat with 2-way power lumbar support, a 4-way power front-passenger seat, a heated steering wheel, and ambient lighting are standard on the Platinum trim. Heated seats are standard in both rows; rear passengers have lots of room to relax with their own climate control settings and sunshades for more comfort. The rear doors also open almost to 90°, making it easy to climb in or fit in a car seat.

Cargo room is 1028L with the 60/40 rear bench up and 2064L with it folded down. A motion-activated tailgate is convenient when your hands are full, and folding down the seats only takes a pull of a lever. Nissan also fitted a Divide-N-Hide cargo management system that lets you adjust two dividers in six different positions.

The Nissan Rogue comes standard with many safety features, including Safety Shield 360, a 360° parking camera, traffic sign recognition, blind spot intervention with lane intervention, and ProPILOT Assist with Navi-link.

According to Nissan Canada, fuel economy ratings are 8.4L/100KM city, 6.7L/100KM highway, for a combined 7.6L/100KM. We’ve done our testing mostly in the city and in the winter, so our fuel consumption is rated a bit higher at 9.1L/100KM.

For 2023, the Nissan Rogue starts at $30,898 for the S FWD, $32,748 for the S AWD, $36,948 for the SV AWD, $39,248 for the Midnight Edition AWD, $41,348 for the SL AWD, and $43,748 for the Platinum AWD. At the time of testing, our Platinum press vehicle had a total price of $44,908 including delivery.

The latest version of the Nissan Rogue is a great contender on the market. It offers what a consumer is looking for in a compact SUV; comfort, versatility, and enough tech. There could be a little more driving refinement, but the ride and handling of this SUV will keep consumers happy for everyday driving. The Rogue doesn’t have a lot of drawbacks, and it will be an excellent purchase for shoppers.
