If someone was looking for a Jeep, it would usually either be the Grand Cherokee or the Wrangler. Both models are extremely popular and offer the off-road capability you would expect from Jeep. The Jeep Renegade is the smallest car in the lineup that you can buy with unique Jeep characteristics that make it stand out in the subcompact crossover category.

We got ourselves the 2022 Jeep Renegade North from Stellantis for the week. The Renegade is powered by a 1.3L MultiAir inline four-cylinder turbocharged engine that delivers 177 horsepower and 210 lb.-ft of torque at 1,750RPM. It’s great in urban areas as it’s easy to maneuver around tight spaces and good acceleration from standstill.
Taking this 4×4 on dirt roads is not a problem either with its standard Selec-Terrain Traction Management System that has four driving modes (Auto, Snow, Sand, and Mud). Each mode has different throttle and traction responses to help drivers get to where they need to be.
The Renegade can also tow up to 2,000 pounds (907 kilograms). The engine does show its weakness on the highway as it struggles to pick up speed when trying to pass and the nine-speed automatic transmission can be smoother; we find that it takes a bit to get into the right gear

The Jeep Renegade is a playful SUV with distinctive Jeep styling. Its boxy shape, round headlamps, and seven slot grille makes the Renegade instantly recognizable as being part of the Jeep family. If you look closely, you’ll see the iconic grille design in the headlights and taillights. Our Colorado Red Renegade North is also fitted with 19-inch diamond cut aluminum wheels wrapped in Goodyear Eagle LS-2 235/45R19 all-season run flat tires.
While the Renegade is small in size, it doesn’t feel that way inside. The cabin is pretty roomy, providing good headroom and legroom for front passengers. The A-pillars are thick which hinder forward visibility but large side and back windows lets the driver look around easier. Rear passengers might feel a little tight due to legroom but it’s still comfortable to be in. Our Renegade also has a large panoramic sunroof that lets in a lot of natural light.

The Uconnect 4C NAV 8.4-inch infotainment system is easy to use with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The touchscreen experiences no lags and physical control knobs are positioned close and are easy to use. The Renegade North also comes equipped with heated cloth bucket seats, heated steering wheel, a 7-inch center driver’s display, cruise control, remote start, hill start assist, back up camera, and an optional 506-watt nine-speaker premium audio sound system with a 6.5-inch subwoofer. Cargo room with the rear seats up is 524L and expands to 1438L with them folded down.
The Renegade is loaded with safety features such as: full-speed collision warning, blind spot monitoring system with rear cross path detection, lane departure warning with lane keeping assist, and trailer sway control.
Fuel economy ratings for the Jeep Renegade are 10.1L/100km city, 8.1L/100km highway, for a combined 9.2L/100km which is what we got for the week.
The Renegade North starts at $36,590, (RED) at $38,085, Altitude at $39,040, Trailhawk at $39,890, and Trailhawk Elite at $42,385. Our Renegade North has the optional ‘Sun, Sound and Wheels Group’ package which bumps up the total price to $37,885 with tax and delivery.
The 2022 Jeep Renegade North is a neat little SUV that stands out with its off-road capability. Exterior styling alone makes this vehicle captivating and it’s nicely equipped for a base model Jeep. The Renegade North will be fine in any weather but if you want a true off-road capable Renegade, you can go for the Trailhawk that gives you an increased 0.8-inch ride height, skid plates, hill descent control, Jeep Active Drive Low with disconnecting rear axle and low range 21:1 ratio, and off-road suspension. The Jeep Renegade is worth a look and is a good ticket into the Jeep family
