If you are looking for a compact SUV, Honda’s best-selling CR-V has always been a top choice for consumers. This fifth-generation model has been in the market since 2017 and you know it’s popular when you see it literally everywhere. What makes the CR-V so appealing though?

To find out, Honda Canada has let us borrow the 2022 Honda CR-V Black Edition for the week. The Black Edition builds on the top-of-the-line Touring trim; it only comes in Crystal Black Pearl or Platinum White Pearl, 19” black aluminum-alloy wheels, a black trivalent chromium grille, and a rear Black Edition badge.

We think this fifth-generation CR-V is aging well; it’s still distinctive with its sculpted hood, muscular fenders, and vertical taillights. The Black Edition makes it look sleeker and sportier than the standard CR-V.

The CR-V is powered by a turbocharged 1.5L four-cylinder engine producing 190 horsepower and 179 lb-ft of torque. Performance isn’t riveting but it is quite humble and gets you to where you need to be.

It is paired with a CVT and AWD is standard. Acceleration isn’t the best and the engine drones quite loud in the cabin, but overall handling is balanced. Steering is light and the ride is refined, absorbing any bumps along the road. We like the brakes on this vehicle as it’s quite responsive.

You’ll find that the interior is quite spacious and has a familiar layout that doesn’t take a lot of time to get used to. There are physical buttons for the climate control and everything else is operated on the 7” touchscreen including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There is significant lag scrolling through menus and picture quality for the back up camera isn’t great either. The black perforated leather seats are comfortable to sit in and it has ‘Black Edition’ stitched on the front seats.

It also features a black woodgrain trim, wireless charging, panoramic sunroof, and a 331-watt 9 speaker with subwoofer sound system. Rear seat passengers have plenty of legroom with heated seats that recline as well.

Cargo room is generous with 1065L and 2146L with the 60/40 split rear seats folded down. We also like to point out how versatile the center console storage is with sliding trays, a deep bin, and an adjustable center armrest that slides and flips up.

Honda’s LaneWatch blind spot display is standard on the Sport and EX-L trims but with the Touring and Black Edition variants, it is fitted with a better blind spot system with rear cross-traffic alert. Standard safety features on the CR-V include forward-collision warning, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow.

Fuel economy ratings for the CR-V are 8.7/7.4/8.1L/100KM city/highway/combined; we got 8.5L/100KM combined for the week. The Honda CR-V starts at $31,470 with the FWD LX, LX at $34,270, Sport at $38,170, EX-L at $39,970, Touring at $43,570, and the Black Edition at $45,370.

The CR-V has always been a practical vehicle and is user friendly for anyone. It is incredibly roomy, comfortable, and easy to drive. Would we get the Black Edition though? If you’re looking for that distinctive avant-garde look, go ahead but we would save the money and choose either the EX-L or Touring model which share most of the same features.

Honda knows that this CR-V is outdated compared to its competitors, so an all-new redesigned CR-V is out for 2023 with an available hybrid powertrain. It’s hard to not include the CR-V on your shopping list as it really combines a great kit and enigmatic demeanour with the Black Edition.
