GMC has given their compact SUV, the Terrain, a refresh for 2022. It received new front and rear end styling with some interior revisions as well. GMC also brought their AT4 trim to the Terrain for buyers who want to venture off-road. As this is the entry level SUV in the lineup, is this something that should be on your shopping list?

We were given the keys to a Summit White 2022 GMC Terrain AT4 from GM Canada for the week. The AT4 trim features a front steel skid plate, 17” gloss black wheels, unique grille with AT4 accents, standard all wheel drive, hill descent control, and Traction Select System with off-road mode. We like the rugged looks of the Terrain; its truck-like grille gives it a commanding presence on the road. The exterior updates from its new LED lighting, bumpers, and wheel designs feel upscale with just the right amount of sportiness.

Powering the Terrain AT4 comes from a 1.5L turbo four-cylinder engine which offers 170 horsepower, 203 lb-ft of torque, and can tow up to 1500 lbs. Power is adequate for this SUV and is enough for everyday driving. Keep in mind, GM wants to focus on fuel economy, so they did drop the more powerful 252 horsepower 2.0L turbo engine option back in 2021 as the 1.5L engine had higher demand from customers. The nine-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly and the Terrain handles well with minimal body roll, confident steering feel, and a comfortable ride with its suspension setup. The Terrain AT4 wears beefier tires, 225/65/R17 Goodyear Wrangler Fortitude HT, with low road noise coming into the cabin.

Inside, the Terrain provides a clean and simple layout. You get heated jet-black leather perforated seats with unique stitching and AT4 embroidered front headrests, heads-up display, heated steering wheel, a seven-speaker Bose audio system, and the optional “SkyScape” panoramic sunroof which lets in plenty of natural light. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is standard on all trim levels and GMC’s infotainment system is very easy to use on the 8” touchscreen.
Our Terrain AT4 is fitted with HD Surround Vision that uses four cameras to provide an overhead view of the vehicle; video quality is amazing and there are many viewing angles to choose from including one to assist when hitching a trailer. The Terrain does provide generous interior space for all passengers, but it falls short compared to its competitors; cargo space is 838L with the seats up and expands to 1792L folded down. The front passenger seat can also fold flat accommodating longer objects up to 8 feet long.
GMC Pro Safety is standard on all trims and includes automatic emergency braking, forward collision alert, lane keep assist, following distance indicator, front pedestrian braking, and auto high beam. Our AT4 has the optional $995 Pro Safety Plus package that adds lane change alert with side blind zone alert, rear cross traffic alert, and rear park assist.
The GMC Terrain AT4 has a fuel economy rating of 9.6/8.3/9.0L/100KM city/highway/combined and we’ve been getting 8.8L/100KM combined for the week.
The GMC Terrain has one FWD option that starts at $30,598 with the SLE. AWD models start at $32,998 for the SLE, $35,598 for the SLT, $36,198 for the AT4, and $41,598 for the Denali. Our Terrain AT4 is fitted with options such as Tech package, GMC Pro Grade package, Infotainment Package II, roof rack cross rails, moulded splash guards, and an engine block heater bringing the total up to $42,948.
The 2022 GMC Terrain is a nice-looking SUV that offers confident handling, roomy interior, and lots of standard safety features. Much like other automakers, this AT4 trim doesn’t provide any significant off-road capabilities compared to its other trim levels as it’s more like an appearance package. We would’ve also liked to see a power bump as other competitors offer better performance in the same price range. The GMC Terrain AT4 is worth looking at for buyers who want an affordable compact SUV and one that’s easy to live with.
